“Next stop: Gotham Heights!” Bart shouted, scooping up Tim. “That’s…woah, you live really, really close by, don’t you?”
Tim laughed. “Yes, Bart, we really don’t have to run. Just get into civvies.”
Bart put Tim down and blurred a little, until he was wearing his normal clothes. “Hey, didja realize I just got naked in front of you?”
“How many times have you pointed that out, Bart?” Tim pulled out his clothes and started changing out of his Robin outfit.
Bart snickered. “Hey, just sayin’.”
Tim flashed a grin. “This is actually really convenient. Dad thinks that I’ve been hiding something from them. A secret boyfriend’s a good excuse for running away without explanation all those times that I’ve gone to save the world.”
“You’re using me to lie to your dad? Rob, you are devious and sneaky. No idea why I like you so much.”
“Remember, call me Tim when we’re here.”
“Gotcha…Tim.”
An old woman opened the door.
“Tim, your parents were expecting you back fifteen minutes ago,” she said. “And who’s this?”
“Hi, Mrs. Mac,” Tim said. “This is my friend Bart. He’s coming over for dinner?”
“Oh, your friend,” Mrs. Mac said. “Well, a pleasure to meet you, Bart. Tim—”
“I know, I know, Dad and Dana are in the living room, right?”
Mrs. Mac nodded. “Yes, Tim.”
Tim grabbed Bart’s wrist. “Come on, Bart.”
They walked into a large room with several expensive-looking couches.
“Dad? Dana?” Tim said to the man and woman sitting on the nearest couch. “I’ve got a few things to tell you.”
The man looked up, and then looked at Bart. “Sure, son. Start with who your friend is?”
“Yeah, sure. Bart, this is my dad, Jack, and my step-mom, Dana. Dad, Dana, this is Bart.”
Dana smiled at him. “Hello, Bart. It’s nice to meet you. I didn’t think Tim had any friends outside of Ives, Ariana, Callie and that Stephanie girl.”
Tim forced a laugh. “Well, I’ve never brought Bart home before.”
“Do you go to Tim’s school, Bart?” Jack asked.
Tim and Bart had discussed the cover story. “No,” Bart said. “I live in Gotham. Tim and I met on this ski trip we went on.”
“Yeah,” Tim said. “Dad, I haven’t been totally honest with you.”
Jack sat up a little straighter. “Is this about all of your disappearances?”
Tim nodded. “I’ve been going to see Bart.”
“And you couldn’t have called?” Jack said.
“The thing is, I’m gay,” Tim said. There, it was out. “Bart’s my boyfriend.”
Silence. Jack and Dana turned to stare at Bart, who fidgeted nervously under their glare. Bart glanced at Tim anxiously, and Tim gave him a reassuring smile.
Then Jack started to laugh.
Dana looked at him. “What’s so funny?” she asked.
“Look, Tim,” Jack said. “Nice try. But did you really think I’d buy that? My son? Gay?”
“You don’t believe me?” Tim asked angrily.
“No, Tim, I don’t. And I’m sick of you lying and running off. I’ve told you this before. We need to get stricter—”
Tim grabbed Bart by the shirt and kissed him savagely.
Bart blushed and glanced at Dana and Jack. They were staring, dumbfounded. After a second, Bart hesitantly put his hands on Tim’s shoulders.
Tim broke the kiss and glared at his dad. “I love Bart. I’m not lying about that.”
“I— really?” Jack asked. He leaned back into the couch. “This isn’t some stupid ploy for attention?”
“No, Dad.”
“Or an excuse for disappearing?”
“No, Dad.” Well, it wasn’t just an excuse.
Dana smiled at Tim. “Well, we’re happy for you. Aren’t we, Jack?”
“Um, yeah.” Jack gave a stretched smile. “Of course. And we’ll love you no matter who you end up…um…with. You can count on that. This just might take some getting used to.”
“Great, thanks,” Tim said. “Bart, come on, I’ll show you my room.”
“You are not going up to your room alone with him, young man,” Jack said sharply.
Tim glared at Jack. “Dad, we’re not going to do anything. I’m just showing him my room. Really, that’s it.”
“You have a history of abusing our trust in you with your dates.”
“The thing with Ariana really was innocent, you know!” Tim said. “And it has nothing to do with Bart!”
Dana caught Bart’s eyes. “Would you like me to give you a tour of the house?” she asked.
Bart glanced at Tim, worriedly, but Tim smiled tightly at him and nodded. He appreciated Dana taking Bart out of this.
Bart grinned at Dana. “Sure, thanks.” They left the room.
Tim waited until they were gone before turning back to his dad. “Look, I swear to you that we haven’t done more than kiss. I don’t want to do more than kiss right now. Mostly when we’re together, we don’t even do that.”
“You say that, but Tim, what if your friend tries to pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do?”
“Bart wouldn’t do that. Dad, please, I love him. Before we started dating, he was a really good friend, and I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think we had a good shot at it.”
“I don’t like it, son.”
“Give him a chance,” Tim begged.
Jack sighed and rubbed his temples. “I told you, I’ll love you regardless of what lifestyle you choose, but I can’t approve of this relationship. You say he was a really good friend, but we’ve never met him.”
“I promise you, Dad--”
“Let me finish, Tim. At least until we know him better, I don’t want you doing any…things with him under my roof. I won’t stop you from…going out, and I guess I can’t stop you from…kissing when you’re out together, but when you’re in my house, I want you to keep your hands to yourself.”
Tim looked down. “Fine. I guess I can accept that.” He heard Dana laugh somewhere in the house. He suppressed a grin. He’d heard that kind of laugh enough to know that Bart was being his usual self. Bizarre, annoying and utterly charming.
“Do his parents know?” Jack asked.
“He lives with his uncle and yes, he knows. We told his family right before we came here.”
“I would like to talk to this uncle of his, then.”
Oracle and Max had agreed to help if Jack asked this.
“You could call right now,” Tim said. “His number’s 555-2227.” The number was actually one of Oracle’s Gotham numbers. She’d arranged for it to automatically connect to the phone at Bart’s house.
Jack stared at Tim, then picked up a phone and dialed.
Three rings, Tim thought, then Jack said, “Hello? This is Jack Drake. Yes, Bart’s…um, yes. Tim’s my son.” Jack stood up and walked out of the room. “So, you’re entirely alright with their…relationship?”
As Jack left, Dana and Bart walked in. Bart was chatting happily to Dana, who looked completely charmed.
“Hey, Tim,” Dana said. “Bart really is a great kid, you know. You should hear him talk about running!”
Bart beamed at the compliment.
“Running, huh?” Tim said. “Bart does like running.”
Dana nodded. “More kids should run. It’s great exercise.”
Bart walked over to Tim, being careful not to run. “How’d it go with your dad?”
“He’s talking to Max now,” Tim said. “He’s not too happy, but he’ll get over it.”
“Of course he will,” Dana said. “He just has to get to know Bart a little better.”
Jack walked back into the room, holding the phone.
“Apparently, Tim’s a good influence on Bart,” Jack said.
Bart nodded and grinned at Tim. “He gets me to do my homework on time.”
Tim rolled his eyes a little.
Mrs. Mac stuck her head in the door. “Dinner’s served,” she said.
Bart was wonderful during dinner. By the end of the meal, even Jack seemed to like him. Tim worried that Bart might be getting too close to giving away his secret identity, but Jack and Dana didn’t suspect anything. When Bart finally clambered into the Redbird next to Tim, Jack had told Bart that he could come by any time. Bart had nodded enthusiastically and said he’d love to, especially if he could have more of Mrs. Mac’s cooking.
“Helen cooks great,” he said, “But this stuff’s awesome.”
Dana and Jack laughed again. “Mrs. Mac certainly is a good cook,” Dana said. “You certainly seemed to enjoy it. You had what, three servings of everything?”
“Four,” Bart said.
“How can you be that skinny and eat so much meat?” Jack asked.
Bart grinned and glanced at Tim again. “I told you. I run. A lot.”
Tim shook his head and grinned. “I’ll be back soon, guys,” he said, buckling his seatbelt.
“Soon, Tim,” Jack said. “It’s late.”
Tim knew that Jack really meant that Tim shouldn’t stay too long making out with Bart. Even if Jack liked Bart, he still wasn’t comfortable with their relationship. Yet.
“I will, Dad,” Tim said. “See you.”
He pulled out. The plan was to take the Redbird out of sight and drop Bart off. From there, Bart would run home to Manchester. Tim knew where he’d drop Bart off, though. There was still one other person he felt he should tell.
