vespertila! Hope you like your present! And the summer challenge thing is next on my to-start list.
"So, why are we doing this?"
Steph glanced at Tim and shrugged her backpack higher on her shoulder. "Ms. Macdougal needed someone to watch her kid."
"I repeat," Tim said. "Why are we doing this?"
"Because I need money and you are a sweet, wonderful boyfriend who will come with me and protect me from the little devil."
"Is she that bad?"
"How should I know? This is the first time I've met her."
"This is a terrible idea."
"Shut up, we're here." Steph rang the doorbell.
"Oh, thank god, you're here," Ms. Macdougal said. "And who's this gentleman?"
"Alvin," Tim said automatically. "Nice to meet you."
Steph glared at him and smiled dazzlingly at Ms. Macdougal. "He's the friend I told you about."
"Oh, of course. Ally, babysitter's here!" Ms. Macdougal shouted up the stairs.
A little blond-haired blue-eyed girl walked down the stairs sucking her thumb.
"Hi, Ally, I'm Steph!" Steph said. "And this is – " She glared at Tim again. "Alvin."
Tim waved a little.
"Okay, sweetie, be good," Ms. Macdougal said, kissing Ally on the head. "John! We'll be late!"
Mr. Macdougal walked downstairs knotting his tie. "I'm here, I'm here! Good bye, baby."
"Bye-bye, Daddy!" Ally said.
When the Macdougals had left, and Ally was watching cartoons, Steph turned to Tim. "Alvin? Really?"
"Sorry, it slipped out!" Tim said.
"Now I'm going to have to call you that all night!"
"We've got other problems," Tim said.
Steph rolled her eyes. "Let me guess, the Justice League called, world's in danger, yadda yadda yadda you're abandoning me."
"No. Did you notice that Ally looks nothing like her parents?"
"So? Lots of kids don't look like their parents."
"I think she's adopted."
"So?"
"Steph, she looks exactly like you."
"What? You don't think – " Steph shook her head. "No. She doesn't look exactly like me."
"Yeah, she's got Dean's ears."
"And she's just the right age…" Steph suddenly turned and grabbed Tim by the collar. "You have to find out for sure. Now."
"What? But Steph – "
"They've got a computer! Find adoption records or something!"
"Steph, it's unethical!" Tim said.
"That could be my baby there!"
"And what would you do if you knew it was?"
"I don't know. But if it is, I'd like to know!"
"Fine," Tim said. "Watch the kid, I'm going upstairs."
"You're a doll," Steph said, pecking him on the cheek. "Hey, Ally! What show are you watching?"
"Laura the Explorer!" Ally said excitedly.
Tim sat down at Ms. Macdougal's desk, feeling a twinge of guilt. It didn't take him long at all to find the adoption papers.
The mother's name wasn't on the Macdougal's forms, but Waynecorp had handled the adoption. Tim had the master passwords, so it wasn't hard at all to find that the mother was, indeed, Steph Brown.
Tim cleared the history, turned to Steph and nodded.
Steph had an odd look on her face. She turned to Ally and looked at her. "Ally…" she said tenderly.
"Yeah, Steph?" Ally said.
"Steph, come here for a minute," Tim said quickly.
"But – "
"Please."
Steph grumbled and stood up. "Fine," she said, pouting.
"You can't tell Ally or the Macdougals that you're Ally's mom!" Tim said.
"Why not? She's my baby! Can't I spend time with my baby?"
"She isn't your baby. Not anymore."
"But – "
"Think of how awkward it'd be for the Macdougals to find out!"
"I – " Steph sighed. "Yeah, I guess."
"So you won't mention it?"
"I guess."
"Promise."
"Fine," Steph said. "I promise."
"Good," Tim said. "I'm going to make dinner."
"Great." Steph looked down for a moment. "Tim, wait!"
"Hmm?"
"Can I at least tell her about my adventures? Not using my name, or whatever, just…stories about Spoiler?"
Tim considered telling her it was a liability to their secret identities, but she looked so hopeful that he just smiled a little.
"Yes, I guess you can. Just don't give away that it's you."
"You are the best boyfriend ever!" Steph said, grinning. "Hey, Ally?" She walked back over to the TV.
"Yeah, Steph?"
"Want me to tell you a story?"
"But Laura – "
"It's about someone cooler than Laura. It's about a superhero!"
"Like Superman?"
"More like Batman. Her name was Spoiler."
"What color was her costume? Was it purple? When I grow up I wanna be a superhero and I'm gonna wear purple and call myself Purple Girl."
"No, it was egg – yes, it was purple. And I'm sure you'd make a great superhero, sweetie."
Tim watched her and smiled. Steph had made the right decision in not keeping the baby, but watching her now, he knew she'd be a wonderful mother when she was ready.
He didn't know how the future would turn out, but watching her with Ally, he couldn't help but imagine a future where he and Steph had their own children to hear their stories.
