Totally with you there! Anyway...fic... --- Bernard was waiting for Tim when he left school in the afternoon.
"I didn't know you went to my school," Tim said.
"I don't," Bernard said smugly. "What's up?"
"I have to go?"
"Does this have to do with your night job?"
Tim shook his head. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I have homework."
"It's Friday, Drake. Don't be that kid."
"Seriously, Bernard. I just - I've got to go."
"With all due respect, that's bullshit. You just don't want to talk about last night."
"Seriously, I don't know what you're talking about."
"Do you really want me to yell it out? Because I'm not an idiot, Tim. Even if I hadn't seen you, well, it makes sense."
"Look, I'm not sure what you saw, but I'm just a normal kid." He gave a half grin. "No idea what you're talking about."
"Oh, you are infuriating!" Bernard said. "Tim, you're not going to convince me that it wasn't you. But I need to, I don't know, this is big! Drake, help me, here! I don't know what to do!" His voice cracked a little in the last sentence.
Tim stopped walking and turned to Bernard. "You want to know what to do? I already told you. Forget it ever happened."
Bernard smiled. "So it was you?"
"Fine, it was. Stop thinking about it. Never mention it again."
"Are you kidding?" Bernard grinned. "That's awesome! Can you introduce me to - "
"Bernard, I'm not secretive about this for me. I didn't want you to know to protect you." He poked Bernard in the chest, hard. "If one of my enemies knew you knew who I am? You could be hurt. Either to figure out who I am or just to hurt me. I couldn't live with myself if that happened."
"I wouldn't tell!" Bernard said. "Not even if they tortured me!"
"I don't want them to torture you! I don't want to put you in that situation!"
"I - fine." Bernard looked down. "I'll never let on that I know."
Tim nodded and squeezed Bernard's shoulder. "Good," he said.
"But Tim?" Bernard said. "I've read the papers. I mean, I don't know what's going on in your life, not at all, but just - if you want someone. To talk to, I mean, or whatever. I'd be happy to."
Tim smiled slightly. "Thanks," he said. "That means a lot to me."
