Summary: Preston keeps staring at Bart. Carol thinks he should go for it.
"You should tell him," Carol said.
Preston looked up. "Huh?"
Carol rolled her eyes and sat down next to him. "Bart. You know, the guy you were just staring at?"
Preston flushed. "I wasn't staring!"
"You're always staring at him," Carol said.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Preston said, looking down at his sandwich and resisting the urge to look up at Bart. "Why would I stare at Bart?"
"Because you're hopelessly in love with him?"
"That's not funny!"
"I'm not laughing," Carol said. "Preston, I've seen you staring. And I've seen how you act around him."
Preston said nothing. He took a bite out of his sandwich and chewed slowly.
"And you should tell him," Carol said.
"Why?" Preston said. "It's not like he likes me back. It'd just make things awkward between us."
Carol snorted.
"What?" Preston said.
"Why are you so sure he won't like you back?" she asked.
"Please," Preston said, his gaze sliding back up to where Bart was talking to Rolly. "He's completely straight."
"Oh?" Carol said.
"I mean, come on, look at him! I've never seen him act gay at all!"
"And since when has Bart ever acted how you'd expect?" Carol said. "You know Bart. He never does the expected thing."
"So you think he's gay?" Preston said hopefully. Across the cafeteria, Bart looked up and saw Preston staring. Preston smiled a little, and Bart grinned and started walking towards them.
"Let's ask him," Carol said. "Hey, Bart!"
"Don't!" Preston said, but Carol ignored him.
"Hi, Carol! Hi, Preston!" Bart said. "What's up?"
"Not much," Carol said. "Bart, have you ever had a crush on a guy?"
Bart nodded. "Yeah, a few times! Like, for instance, I've got this crush on my, um, friend, Rob...ert. Robert. Yeah. And other people. Have you?" he asked Carol.
Carol nodded, face straight. "Yes, Bart. I have."
"Cool," Bart said. He sat down. "What's up, Preston?"
"Nothing," Preston said.
"I've got to go," Carol said. "See you guys later." She gave Preston a look as she walked away. Preston guessed she was trying to tell him to tell Bart. He wasn't sure if he'd have the nerve.
"Hey, did you hear?" Bart asked. "Exploding Explosions 2: The Big Boom is coming out this weekend!"
"Oh, yeah!" Preston said. "I want to see that!"
"So do I!" Bart said. "I loved the first one. Wanna see it with me?"
"Uh, yeah," Preston said. "With, like, everyone else, right?"
"Huh? No, just us," Bart said.
"Just the two of us?" Preston said.
"Yeah," Bart said. "You know, like a date?"
Preston dropped his sandwich. "A d-date?" he said. "You and me? Really?"
"Yeah," Bart said, suddenly anxious. "Is that okay? Carol said people are weird about that now, but I thought..."
"No, no, it's...it's unexpected," Preston said. "I thought you were straight..."
"Straight?" Bart said, blinking. "As opposed to what, bent?"
"What?" Preston said.
"I'm confused," Bart complained. "Are you saying no?"
"No!" Preston said. "I mean, yes, I mean, wait. I do want to go to the movie with you, Bart. On a date."
"Awesome!" Bart said. "So are we, like, dating now?"
Preston smiled, a little nervously. "I guess so," he said.
"Cool!" Bart said. He leaned forward and kissed Preston quickly.
"Wha – Bart!" Preston said, blushing furiously. "You can't just – Everyone probably saw!"
"So?" Bart said. "Is this the twentieth century people being weird about guys and guys liking each other again?"
"What the – you say the strangest things, Bart," Preston said. "But I mean, I wasn't planning to come out!"
"Hey, Allen!" Evil Eye said. "Were you and Preston just kissing?"
Preston groaned. Everyone must have heard. Evil Eye's voice could carry.
"Allen, what's up with that?" one of the older kids asked.
"Preston's my boyfriend," Bart explained, matter-of-factly. "So I kissed him."
"But that's...that's..."
"What?" Bart asked.
"Y'know..."
"No I don't," Bart said. "Is there a problem?" Bart just looked so completely clueless and innocent. It was almost as if he really didn't know.
"Uh...I guess not," the guy said.
"I can't believe I missed it!" One of the girls said.
"Oh, it was adorable!" her friend said.
Bart shrugged and turned back to Preston. "What were we talking about again?"
Preston shook his head. Bart's weirdness had just kept them out of trouble again, it seemed. He hoped it would last.
"Nothing," Preston said. "You'd just kissed me."
"Right," Bart said. "Can I do it again?"
Preston looked around. People were still looking and talking. "Let's go somewhere private," he suggested.
Bart grinned and grabbed his hand. "Okay," he said. "C'mon!"

Date: 2008-02-20 03:55 am (UTC)Exploding Explosions gets a little repetitive after the first twelve times you've watched it. That's what sequels are for!
And just wait until you see the movie that Jean and Wanda see in my X-Men First Class fic.

Well, Helen, too, but Bart basically told her.
I'm glad you enjoyed!
