Random bits about my day yesterday.
Nov. 5th, 2008 09:39 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Woke up terrified Obama would lose and I'd blame myself since I didn't campaign much at all. Usually I do campaign a lot, but this year I did two weeks in the summer before the primaries then nothing.
Went to class.
Voted for the first time. Fuck YEAH. Had clam chowder at the poll, only it was weird chowder. Apparently there's a huge difference between Manhattan clam chowder and New England clam chowder. Chowder should be white and creamy, dammit! I barely ate any. Then I had a bit of apple crisp and ate maybe half. Maybe. I wasn't very hungry.
Went home, chatted with our local candidate, went back to my dorm, failed to write for a few hours.
Whined about not being able to write for a few hours. (Ask
felonazcorp. I was terrible.)
Went to my friend's dorm to write instead. Then I did manage to write. This friend? She's doing NaNoWriMo with me. And doing better than me. But not insurmountably better. Now, I'm insanely competitive. One of those things about me. I want to be ahead of her word count. This inspires me to write more, trying to beat her lead.
I made the mistake of telling her. Now, she's at 12,000 words and I'm at 10,000.
Still! It's incredibly cool to be writing as much as I am!
Then, the two of us went to hang up fliers for her club and get food. I had an amusing exchange.
RANDOM GUY: That flier's not straight.
ME: *doesn't think or look or anything* YOU'RE not straight.
RANDOM GUY: ...yes, yes that's true.
Then I realized that if it was someone else, that could have been extremely offensive. Man, I love my school. We're all crazy liberals.
Then we went back to my friend's dorm and we watched the Adam West Batman movie, only the end was cut off. The four villains were in the United World Building, Batman and Robin were running through the streets, and...it cut off. SUCK. Then we checked the election results and saw that Obama was ahead. Woo! Time to have a writing and checking the polls party.
When Obama won Virginia, I knew there was no way he could lose. California would go for him, of course, and with him already having 220 electoral votes, that would push him over the top. My friend and I were looking for him to win Florida, knowing that if he won it, he'd win the election, but as it was, he wouldn't have needed Florida!
I realized he'd won, but it hadn't sunk in yet. I pulled out my phone, called my family and started shrieking into the phone that I knew Obama had won now and damn.
We went to the Campus Center where apparently he'd either passed 270 for real or everyone had figured out what I'd figured out. Everyone was screaming and hugging each other. We listened to McCain's speech, cheering and booing, and honestly, not having any hard feelings. That was the best speech I've heard from him, and you know? I don't hate that man. I don't hate Palin either, though neither will win my favorite person award. They're great people, I'm sure, but I disagree with their beliefs. And Obama will make a better president. I hope.
There was madness. Some guys stripped down to nothing and streaked the quad. I called my friends who had worked on the campaign and my grandparents and my uncle. I couldn't help screaming in excitement. Obama had been my candidate. I was there with him from the start. I've shaken his hand, twice. My grandparents have hosted fundraisers to which he's actually been early on in the campaign. Michelle Obama's hugged my little sister. Hell, my grandparents supported him when he was running for Senate!
Seriously, I'm kind of high on life right now. It's an amazing feeling.
We watched Obama's acceptance speech, yelling and clapping and generally being an excited mass of 18-22 or so year-olds. This was most of our first presidential election. For me, it was my first election ever. Except for that one about tax raises in spring, which we lost and my school almost lost the Shakespeare production because of it.
Then we all ran around celebrating it. There were random cries of "Yes we can!" and "Obama!" My friend and I took off our shirts and ran around screaming. Though it was cold, so we didn't do it for long. We ran into other friends of ours and generally were crazy.
A few friends and I got together in someone's dorm and just sort of sat. There were parties everywhere, but none of us really felt like going to them. Parties are crazy and we were pretty tired.
Then I went back to my dorm and noticed that the internet had exploded.
So. That was my day.

I laughed my ass off at this :D
also: there is a big difference between white (new england) and red (manhattan) chowder, white is made with a cream base, and red has a tomato base

Date: 2008-11-05 03:35 pm (UTC)And go ahead and be competitive about writing if that helps. As long as it doesn't turn bloody and everyone is still friends afterward. :)

Date: 2008-11-05 04:47 pm (UTC)Also: Yay, Obama! Quiet celebrations are good too! Though I imagine there were less streakers...

Date: 2008-11-05 04:19 pm (UTC)Sos if that comes off as pasimistic, but UK politics is annoying the hell out of me at the moment :/

Date: 2008-11-05 04:23 pm (UTC)I wish my school was a bunch of crazy liberals. Instead, we get hate crimes. And sexual predators. And McCain supporters.
I was in class during most of the excitement. I have late classes. But to be honest, since most people seem to be McCain supporters, I probably wouldn't have been doing much anyway. It would have been awkward. :(

Date: 2008-11-05 04:52 pm (UTC)My teachers were celebrating along with us. I saw one of them around one AM and chatted with him for a while, and my Greek teacher let us out early since we were all, she included, exhausted from staying up and celebrating. I don't think any teacher would have kept class going during the election. Though we're on the East Coast, so classes were over by then.

Date: 2008-11-05 10:47 pm (UTC)It was ever so slightly facepalm-esque since they know far more about the American electoral process then they do the Canadian >_<' but apparently ours is boring and 'did you know the states uses computers and do you think people use those boothes to check on their webkinz while they decide on who to vote for? " >__< Good kids really... the class vote on the american election had been 23/24 for Obama... the kids were so ramped about it.

I'm writing a sonnet about it.
