Tim could jump into battle without a second thought. He could stare at unimaginable horrors and not even flinch.

But he was still a coward.

It was obvious that Bernard liked him. Tim was clever enough to realize that from the start. But even so, every time Tim had a chance, a perfect opening to ask Bernard out, he chickened out.

It was stupid. The worst Bernard could do would be say no, and Tim didn't think that was even that likely! There was absolutely nothing to fear, Tim told himself, yet again, as Bernard walked over to him.

"You still up for that movie this afternoon?" Bernard asked.

"Sure," Tim said. Now, ask him now. "Horrific Horror sounds awesome."

"Indeed," Bernard said, catching Tim's arm and pulling him down the hall. "But now we are running late. Onward, to class!"

Tim should not have been terrified by a simple little touch. He'd touched substances that, if he wasn't careful, would burn his skin off. He'd touched Poison Ivy's special pollen, even. Bernard's hand did not have the magical ability to judge Tim's feelings from a single touch. Tim was being stupid and cowardly.

Throughout the day, Tim continued to fail time and time again to tell Bernard that he was hoping their dinner and a movie could be a date. He should be able to do this. If Bruce knew how he shied away from danger like this...Bruce could never learn about this. Ever.

The credits were rolling and Bernard had his arm slung casually over the back of Tim's seat. They were far too close and Tim knew it was the perfect time to make a move but he just couldn't risk it, couldn't take the chance.

"Well, see you later," Tim said, standing on the steps in front of the house Dana and his dad would be asleep by now, and he knew he should say something, do something, and he also knew he wouldn't, so he just smiled and went inside.

No.

Tim might be terrified when it came to matters of the heart, but he knew he had to take this chance. A little voice in his head that sounded alarmingly like Dick reminded him that faint heart never won fair lady. Tim threw open the door. Bernard hadn't reached his car yet.

"Wait!" Tim said. Bernard turned and Tim wasn't sure what to say, what to do, but something must have tipped Bernard off because he was walking - no - running back to Tim and before Tim could figure out how to word his confession properly Bernard was kissing him - and Tim twined his hands in Bernard's hair and kissed him back, smiling against Bernard's mouth.

Tim knew he wasn't very brave, but sometimes, he didn't have to be.

I debated between making the end sad...but I couldn't leave Tim like that! Plus, if I wanted angst, I could go to the real series.
